Recently, Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC), in collaboration with Diabetes WA, successfully hosted two health talks at the Balcatta and Willetton Community Hubs. These sessions provided seniors with authoritative information on diabetes management, empowering them with essential knowledge for better health.

The two sessions offered a structured and accessible overview of Type 2 diabetes, covering its characteristics, management strategies, and available support through the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS). The speaker emphasised that Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that can be effectively managed through a healthy lifestyle, highlighting the importance of a balanced diet, regular exercise, and blood glucose monitoring. Additionally, NDSS was introduced as a vital support platform in Australia, offering registered users educational resources and professional guidance to help them manage their condition more confidently.

During the session on blood sugar management, the speaker used specialised visual aids to demonstrate how glucose levels fluctuate in the body, deepening seniors’ understanding of the significance of regular monitoring. Real-life case studies were also presented to illustrate practical blood sugar control techniques and strategies for handling fluctuations.

The seminars saw enthusiastic participation from attendees, with seniors engaging actively in the Q&A segment to explore specific aspects of diabetes management. The speaker noted that through CWCC, vital health knowledge and local resources are effectively communicated to seniors from diverse cultural backgrounds, contributing significantly to overall community well-being.

To ensure accessibility for all, CWCC remains committed to “barrier-free communication.” At the seminars, real-time interpretation services were provided in Mandarin, Cantonese, and Vietnamese, allowing seniors to engage in one-on-one discussions with professionals for personalised advice. Furthermore, bilingual speakers fluent in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese were invited to facilitate direct interaction, breaking down language and cultural barriers and enhancing both engagement and learning outcomes.

Looking ahead to 2025, CWCC will continue to offer more health and information seminars, inviting all community members to participate and take steps towards a healthier and more fulfilling life. These seminars are multilingual and free of charge, with open registration available at any time.
