In mid-February, Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC) successfully hosted the “Understanding Hepatitis B” health seminar at its Balcatta and Willetton Community Hubs. To ensure accessibility for all community members, the seminar was conducted in English and Chinese, with Cantonese interpretation available. Led by an expert from Hepatitis WA, the session provided essential insights into this common yet often overlooked disease, equipping attendees with scientific knowledge for better prevention and management.
The seminar highlighted that over 200,000 people in Australia are living with hepatitis B (HBV). However, because the disease often presents no symptoms in its early stages, many individuals are only diagnosed years later—sometimes after it has progressed to liver cirrhosis or liver cancer. This underscores the importance of regular health check-ups for early detection and effective management.
When discussing transmission, the expert dispelled common misconceptions, emphasising that hepatitis B is only spread through blood, sexual fluids, or from mother to child during birth. It cannot be transmitted through daily activities such as sharing meals, shaking hands, hugging, or using everyday utensils. This clarification relieved many seniors’ concerns and helped foster a more supportive and informed community.
For individuals at higher risk but not yet infected, the expert strongly recommended vaccination as the most effective way to prevent hepatitis B. For those already diagnosed with chronic hepatitis B, maintaining regular medical check-ups, a healthy diet, proper rest, moderate exercise, and weight control are essential strategies for managing the condition and slowing disease progression.
During the interactive Q&A session, attendees participated in an engaging quiz that reinforced key learnings. Many seniors actively participated, expressing that the seminar was informative and practical, prompting them to take proactive steps in managing their health.
CWCC remains committed to delivering a diverse range of health talks, covering topics such as chronic disease management, mental well-being, and nutrition.
