In Western Australia, one in five people is caring for a loved one. Carers from culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds, especially women, often face extra challenges like language barriers, cultural differences, and difficulty finding helpful information. Many of these amazing carers take on the enormous responsibility of looking after family members but don’t always get the support they need in return. To help address this, Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC) recently joined forces with Ishar Multicultural Women’s Health Services to host a special information session. This event was designed to break down barriers and bring hope to those who need it most!
During the session, CWCC staff highlighted two key government-funded initiatives: Care Finder and Carer Gateway. As one of WA’s most influential Chinese community service organisations, CWCC is deeply rooted in aged care and disability services—and remains at the forefront of supporting carers. “We understand the hardship every carer goes through, especially immigrant women who are juggling care responsibilities while trying to earn a living,” CWCC staff explained. “They give so much, yet often forget that they too deserve care.”
As a Carers WA partner, CWCC delivers comprehensive support through the Carer Gateway programme. This includes five core services:
- Professional counselling, offering a safe space for emotional support,
- peer support groups, helping carers connect and reduce isolation,
- financial assistance to ease the burden of domestic and medical costs,
- respite care, providing carers with much-needed time to rest and recharge and
- one-on-one coaching to help carers build personalised growth and self-care plans.
All services are available following a needs assessment. CWCC helps eligible carers through the planning process to ensure they receive the most appropriate support. Importantly, all support is delivered with cultural sensitivity, ensuring that carers from diverse backgrounds feel respected, understood, and included.
