At Chung Wah Community Care (Chung Wah CC), we are committed to ensuring our community feels safe in their day-to-day activities. With this in mind, continuous improvement is essential. Therefore, we regularly host online and in-person training courses for our team to ensure their safety knowledge is up-to-date and always ready.
Last week, we invited experts from organisations to educate our team on emergency management. To ensure our team's preparedness and safety and comply with Australia's laws, Chung Wah CC has created an Emergency Control Organization (ECO). ECO members include the chief warden, assistant chief warden, and other emergency response personnel. In the case of an emergency, you may identify each team member by their hat colour. For instance, both the chief warden and assistant chief warden wear a white colour hat.
Major disasters can be broad, including natural catastrophes (hurricanes, tornados, storms, earthquakes, landslides, etc.), terrorist attacks, chemical explosions, or architectural failures. One of the critical and often preventable catastrophes is fire. The trainers use case scenarios to cover basic fire safety, evacuation plans, and other rescue skills. During the training session, he explains the citizen's natural behaviours vs corrective responses.
The emergency response begins when an incident is imminent or immediately after an event occurs. It encompasses activities that address the direct effects of an incident. Therefore, the second half of the course focused on educating the principles and practices of using a fire extinguisher and the hazards associated with fighting small or developing fires quickly.
Did you know that fire is a chemical reaction that requires three elements to be present for the response to take place? The three elements are heat/ignition source, fuel, and oxygen. Understanding this basic principle in identifying strategies to put out a fire is vital. Students also learned the four fire transmission types and six fire extinguishers to understand evacuation strategies.
Different types of fire extinguishers for different types of fire. Inadequately using the wrong ones can adversely lead to a significant disaster incident. For example, the water-based fire extinguisher used on electrical or oil fires can cause electric shock or explosions and can cause the oil to spread. That's why it is important to understand different types of extinguishers for different classes of fire.
Lastly, this training includes live demonstrations allowing students to have practical hands-on experience to improve their knowledge of fire safety and how to use fire extinguishers properly.
