CWCC Evergreen College Health Assessments: Measurable Progress from Consistent Exercise

Recently, Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC) ’s Evergreen College successfully concluded its final semester health and fitness assessments at its Balcatta and Willetton Community Hubs, with nearly 200 seniors participating. By compiling and analysing the assessment data, participants gained a clear and tangible understanding of their health status and improvements, inspiring greater motivation to continue exercising regularly.

The assessments comprised four key tests: the sit-to-stand test, walking test, grip strength test, and seated forward reach test. These evaluations comprehensively measured seniors’ balance, mobility, muscle strength, and flexibility—all critical for maintaining quality of life and independence.

During the assessments, CWCC staff patiently guided seniors through each test, ensuring accuracy and scientific rigour. The results revealed that many participants experienced significant improvements due to consistent exercise. For example, one senior noted that their time to complete five sit-to-stand repetitions reduced from nearly 30 seconds to just 20 seconds. Another shared that while they once struggled with arm stretches, they can now comfortably reach further distances. These visible, measurable progressions significantly boosted participants’ confidence and enthusiasm for staying active.

Fitness assessments are a vital part of Evergreen College activities. Held at the end of each semester, they provide seniors with a quantitative way to track their health. New participants also undergo initial assessments, creating baseline data for ongoing health comparisons and progress tracking.
