What is captivating so many seniors?
Chung Wah Community Care (Chung Wah CC) 's calligraphy class at the Balcatta Community Hub has garnered a keen audience among our senior clients. Inspired and encouraged by the volunteer instructors of the calligraphy class, what began as mere appreciation from a distance, evolved into an eagerness to participate, leading many seniors to join the world of calligraphy. Calligraphy has not only become a medium for them to communicate but also has enriched their lives with the treasures of traditional Chinese culture.
Calligraphy stimulates brain activity in seniors, enhancing their memory. Practising calligraphy improves their observation skills, delves deep into the nuances of brush strokes, and studies the structure and combination of characters. This mental exercise makes their brains more agile and their thoughts more vibrant. Calligraphy also serves as a brain booster and helps in preventing dementia.
Practising calligraphy also refines one's character, purifies the soul, and cultivates a refined taste. It strengthens determination, stabilises emotions, diminishes worries, and improves temperament. As seniors achieve a tranquil state of mind, they experience a union of mind and movement, creating a harmonious atmosphere.
Moreover, calligraphy elevates the cultural knowledge of seniors, boosting their confidence. This art form, profound in its depth and breadth, encompasses rich cultural meanings. Engaging in calligraphy enhances seniors' knowledge of literature, aesthetics, and appreciation and continues the legacy of traditional Chinese culture.
Overall, taking up calligraphy is a commendable choice for seniors. It not only nurtures the mind and strengthens the physique but also diverts distracting thoughts, providing solace to the soul. Practising calligraphy imbues seniors' confidence in their daily lives and hopes for the future.
