In a world filled with diverse cultures and traditions, the question arises: How can we create an inclusive aged care system that values every individual's unique heritage?
On 24th August, Chung Wah Community Care (Chung Wah CC) was privileged to join a seminar organised by the Association for Culturally Appropriate Services (AfCAS) in Mt. Lawley. The focal theme is "Access to Respectful Aged Care for Migrant & Aboriginal Seniors".
Alongside Sally, our representative from Chung Wah CC, other key speakers included Marc Orlando from Macquarie University, Faith Karakas from All Graduates, and AfCAS Chairperson, Mary Gurgone. Sally provided an overview of the Chung Wah Association and Chung Wah CC's history and service spectrum. She highlighted many unique challenges faced by senior Asian immigrants from non-English backgrounds. Anxiety stemming from linguistic and cultural barriers, hesitation to embrace community aid, and a lack of familial support rank high on this list. The language barrier, in particular, can severely hinder communication and access to essential information.
Such linguistic challenges can inadvertently lead to economic struggles, housing dilemmas, social isolation, and eleven familial detachment. Sally cited examples from the EnCOMPASS program, detailing how it assists senior immigrants in accessing the government-funded My Aged Care services. The team at Chung Wah CC speaks the language of these senior immigrants and understands their cultural nuances. From June 2021 to June 2023, Chung Wah CC held over 40 'Home-based Elderly and Elderly Services' seminars, elucidating My Aged Care for more than 2,600 members from various communities, including those from China, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and India. Leveraging our linguistic and cultural strengths, we have provided hands-on assistance to over 360 individuals in applying for My Aged Care services and in the follow-up approval process. Currently, Chung Wah CC is a member of the care finder program, spearheaded by WA Primary Health Alliance, offering complimentary care finder services in North Perth. This initiative aims to facilitate seniors in need, ensuring they access appropriate care services.
Chung Wah has been servicing the WA community since 1909, dedicated to improving the quality of life of individuals from diverse backgrounds. Moreover, Chung Wah CC has over 35 years of professional care experience helping seniors and people with disability improve their well-being and better integrate into the community. In 2023, we're promoting our theme, "Embrace, Elevate & Flourish", and build a better community for all.
