On October 17, Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC) participated in the 2024 Carers Conference hosted by Carers WA. Our CWCC representatives, Ken and Sally, shared valuable insights on supporting senior carers from diverse cultural backgrounds in navigating Australia’s complex caregiving system. Their presentation brought an essential perspective on the unique challenges faced by migrant communities.
In many communities, the role of a carer often goes unnoticed, and in some cultures, the term “carer” itself doesn’t even exist. Caregiving responsibilities are seen as natural family obligations, and the hard work of carers is frequently taken for granted. This lack of recognition leaves many carers feeling profoundly isolated and unsupported as they shoulder both physical and emotional burdens. They also encounter significant challenges when seeking access to support and resources.
With a deep understanding of many carers’ challenges, CWCC has collaborated with Carers WA to provide targeted assistance through the Carer Gateway program. This initiative offers comprehensive consultations, registration guidance, personalised action plans, and timely referrals to relevant services, ensuring that carers’ long-term needs are met. Thanks to CWCC’s involvement, 173 carers have gained access to essential government services.
CWCC employs a thoughtful “empowerment approach in supporting carers from multicultural backgrounds.” This approach is incredibly impactful for senior carers, who often have limited digital literacy and restricted access to information. Many carers who migrated to Australia as adults carry deeply rooted cultural values, sometimes viewing the need to seek external help as a source of shame or burden.
To address these challenges, the CWCC team brings patience, understanding, and cultural sensitivity, working closely with carers to build trust and guide them gently toward the support and services they need. This approach goes beyond simply providing information—it offers emotional companionship and a source of strength, helping carers reframe their perspectives and regain control and confidence in their lives.
