At Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC), we empower our seniors to shine! Through engaging activities and opportunities to express their passions, we cultivate a warm, friendly atmosphere where life experiences are celebrated and every talent is cherished.

Mrs Wang (Soo Hun), a valued client at the Willetton Community Hub, was born in Singapore in 1939 and raised nine children. Her kitchen was once the heart of her family, where love was expressed through every home-cooked meal. "I've always enjoyed cooking," she recalled. "When others are happy with what I make, I feel fulfilled. In my younger days, if I liked a dish, I'd always ask how to make it."

Although her children are now grown and she no longer needs to cook daily, Madam Soo Hun still finds joy in the kitchen. “These days, I cook less often, but when festivals come around, I still like to make something special for my family and friends. And I’m happy to share my recipes.”

This Lunar New Year, Madam Soo Hun brought her homemade taro cake to the Willetton Community Hub to share with others. The response was immediate — smiles, praise, and requests for more. Soft, fragrant and full of flavour, her taro cake reminded many of home and tradition.

To encourage others to try it themselves, she graciously shared her personal recipe: Taro Cake (芋头糕) – Madam Soo Hun’s Recipe

Ingredients

  • 3 cups rice flour
  • 1 cup tapioca flour
  • 8 cups of water
  • 3 tablespoons oil
  • Minced garlic and shallots
  • Sesame oil, salt, pepper and chicken powder (to taste)

Method

  1. Sauté the garlic and shallots. Mix half into the flour batter and save the rest for garnish.
  1. Mix the rice flour with water. Add sesame oil, salt, pepper and chicken powder. Stir well.
  1. Microwave for five 20-minute intervals until the mixture sets into a cake.

Since joining CWCC, Soo Hun has found not just companionship and support, but also a sense of purpose. Her cooking is not only appreciated — it is celebrated. "I'd love to make it again," she said. "Next time, maybe I'll bring it for everyone during another festive gathering."

For Soo Hun, food represents care and connection. Through her cooking, she shares stories, memories and a lifetime of wisdom. CWCC believes that every senior carries a legacy worth sharing. Whether through a treasured recipe, a favourite song, or a lifelong skill, seniors in our community continue to enrich those around them. Their stories are heard, their talents recognised, and their presence deeply valued, today and always.
