In late November, Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC) hosted two commemorative morning teas at the Balcatta Community Hub, marking its 40th anniversary with heartfelt celebrations. Senior clients and their families came together with staff and volunteers to reflect on CWCC’s remarkable journey and look forward to an inspiring future. The vibrant events featured delicious food, captivating performances, and thoughtfully curated commemorative gifts, sharing the joy of CWCC’s milestone with everyone present.

The celebrations opened with an emotional speech by CWCC’s CEO Theresa Kwok, who traced back the extraordinary journey from humble beginnings with just one full-time staff to become Perth’s largest multicultural service provider. Acknowledging the unwavering support of CWCC’s senior clients as the foundation of this success, Theresa reaffirmed CWCC’s steadfast commitment to delivering high-quality, culturally sensitive care for immigrant communities, even amidst upcoming aged care reforms.

The highlight of this event was a mesmerising tai chi performance by the Liaoshude Tai Chi Team, followed by a touching donation ceremony that received resounding applause. Demonstrating their solidarity and generosity, the 30-member team collectively raised an impressive $3,500 for the Bentley Community Hub development project, with each member contributing over $100 on average. Theresa commended their efforts, expressing deep gratitude for their selfless support.

Master Liao, the team’s leader, shared how he regularly updates his students about the Bentley Community Hub during tai chi classes, inspiring them to contribute to the community’s long-term growth. Remarkably, some children from the team donated their red envelope money with their parent’s support, instilling a sense of social responsibility in the younger generation. Australian group members also participated actively, showcasing the community’s inclusivity and mutual support.

The tai chi team members shared heartfelt thoughts when reflecting on their motivation for giving. Master Liao highlighted that “benevolence” lies at the core of tai chi culture, encouraging practitioners to act with kindness and generosity. Team member Yuki eloquently summarised: “It’s about everyone helping each other.” Another member, Wen Pingchun, added: “We build good relationships and support one another.”

Inspired by the tai chi team’s example and Theresa’s rallying call, CWCC senior clients also contributed generously, raising over $10,000 across the two-day celebration. These donations, made during CWCC’s 40th-anniversary morning teas, were deeply meaningful—not only as a testament to CWCC’s four decades of dedicated service but also as an embodiment of seniors giving back to their community and strengthening the solidarity of the immigrant spirit.
