As older people (or seniors) age, they increasingly rely on others due to declining physical abilities. Concerns about rights and financial autonomy are common and need clear answers from professional organisations. Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC) addressed this by inviting Advocare to discuss the "Charter of Aged Care Rights" and elder abuse at the Balcatta and Willetton Community Hubs. This initiative aims to provide legal protection and awareness for seniors.
The Charter, available in multiple languages, lists rights including safe, high-quality care, respect, and independence for those receiving government-funded aged care services. It defines eight "Aged Care Quality Standards" (ACQS) with detailed requirements. Organisations like CWCC ensure information is easy to understand. The Charter also outlines the responsibilities of clients, families, and caregivers, including respect for staff and other clients. If dissatisfied, clients can initiate a complaint mechanism within the organisation. If unresolved, independent agencies like Advocare offer free resolution services.
The seminar then turned to the discussion about elder abuse. Statistics in Western Australia indicate one in twenty seniors experiences abuse, often by family members. Financial abuse, including theft and manipulation of wills, is common. The speaker emphasised that seniors' financial rights are protected by law and advised contacting the WA Elder Abuse Helpline (1300 724 679) for suspected cases. Our seniors gained valuable information from the sharing and applauded the speakers in appreciation.
