The talk featured Dementia WA expert Labbie as the keynote speaker and included translations in Mandarin, Cantonese, and Vietnamese. Real-life examples and engaging activities illustrated memory and brain function complexities.
A key focus of the health talk was helping seniors distinguish between normal memory changes and those that warrant attention. Labbie explained that occasionally forgetting where you placed your glasses or someone's name is normal and doesn't significantly impact daily life. However, frequent memory lapses or those involving potential dangers, like forgetting to turn off the gas, should be taken seriously.
Labbie shared practical tips to help seniors enhance their memory, such as writing things down by hand instead of typing. For example, a whiteboard by the refrigerator can be a helpful reminder tool. Creating lists and grouping items reduces cognitive load. Establishing routines, like taking medication at the same time each day, is highly effective. For less routine tasks, such as doctor's appointments, using calendars, clocks, and smartphone apps can help alleviate the memory burden.
Labbie advised maintaining brain health with a balanced diet, regular exercise, continuous learning, and staying socially connected. He recommended CWCC's Evergreen College program for seniors to meet new friends, build social networks, and maintain physical activity at home through online content.
