At the Willetton Community Hub of Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC), seniors are not just passing the time but sharing their passion for life and wisdom with others. They discover joy, purpose, and a more profound sense of community through giving, interacting, and connecting. Recently, three inspiring stories stood out.
At 84, Mr Peng is a familiar face at the community hub. Sprightly and full of energy, he credits his good health to staying active in his home garden. This season, he harvested a box of fresh oranges and brought them to share with everyone at lunch. Smiling, he said, "Keep moving and that's how you stay young," as he handed out the fruit. His generous gift was more than a snack, but it symbolised the wholesome life he continues to cultivate.
Ms Lan, 78, shared something closer to the heart and taste buds. She brought a batch of Hakka tea cakes, traditional steamed treats that are now hard to find in Australia. Offering them to CWCC staff and volunteers, she explained that these snacks are a fading part of cultural memory. Even more touching was her suggestion: she'd love to teach others how to make them by hand at the centre, so more people can reconnect with this special flavour from home.
Meanwhile, Mr Lai chose to share his passion through brush and ink. During a cultural activity, he eagerly introduced Chinese calligraphy to a new English-speaking friend. The two practised side by side, quietly concentrating and laughing together at others. As strokes danced across the page, so too did a bridge of cultural understanding begin to form. For Mr Lai, this was more than a lesson; it was a moment to showcase his skill and proudly share his heritage.
These seemingly simple moments paint a deeply human picture of life at CWCC, from oranges to teacakes, calligraphy to shared laughter. Here, seniors are not passive recipients of care; they are active contributors, bringing their energy, talents, and stories into the heart of the community. In giving back, they also stay connected, feel valued, and continue to thrive. Staff and volunteers, in turn, feel that warmth and are reminded of the importance of respect, empathy, and shared belonging.
True wellbeing isn't just about physical health; it's about finding meaning and motivation in daily life. The Willetton Community Hub offers that space, where seniors rediscover joy through sharing and companionship.
