In the final week of August, Chung Wah Community Care (Chung Wah CC)'s Evergreen College proudly celebrated the end of another successful term with a heartfelt graduation ceremony. On the day, Principal Nunu was joined by English instructor Keong, Chinese calligraphy tutor Alan, and long-time volunteer Margaret to present certificates to students. The delightful smiles and proud faces said it all, and with each certificate represented not just achievement, but a joyful commitment to lifelong learning.
A highlight of the term was the introduction of a new crochet class at the Balcatta Community Hub, which was warmly embraced by students. Beyond learning a practical skill, many found a renewed sense of calm and happiness. Among them were Ms Xie and Ms Gao, two seniors living with dementia, who showed moving levels of focus and peace during class. Their stories are powerful reminders that cognitive decline doesn't erase the ability to learn or feel joy — especially in a supportive, inclusive environment.
At the Willetton Community Hub, another uplifting story emerged. A passionate knitter, Sally stepped up to teach others how to make knitted beanies. In doing so, she shared her love of the craft and discovered a new sense of purpose and self-worth.
Meanwhile, digital skills classes at the Morley and Willetton hubs opened new doors for many seniors. For some, it was their first time using a smartphone or computer. Ms Shi, who once called herself a "blank slate" in tech, learned how to create a MyGov account, use Google Maps, and stay connected online.
"I used to be afraid of smartphones," one student shared. "But with Sherman's patience and support, I realised I could learn. Now I'm excited to keep going and explore even more." Another summed it up beautifully: "Gain strength. Learn for life." This sentiment perfectly reflects the spirit of Evergreen College.
Yoke, who participated in both the crochet and digital classes, echoed this motivation: "I'm not only learning to stay mentally and physically active, I also want to pass on what I've learned and help other seniors benefit too."
As Evergreen College wraps up its fourth term with a strong sense of accomplishment, a fresh new chapter begins. Starting in September, the new "Health" term will focus on topics such as physical and mental well-being, healthy lifestyles, movement, and nutrition. Chung Wah CC warmly invites more seniors to join us on this ongoing journey, embracing learning, connection, and a healthier life together.
