In early September, Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC) 's Evergreen College Morley organised two "Bayswater History Walks", with over a dozen seniors participating in each session. Together, they visited the Bayswater Drill Hall, Halliday House, and Dome Maylands, embarking on a journey through time to explore local heritage and feel the enduring warmth of shared history.
At Halliday House, volunteer Glen guided the group through a remarkable chapter of early Chinese migration, the story of Mr Hu Che-Em (also known as Hop Chong). Born in Guangzhou in 1873, Mr Hu arrived in Australia via Fremantle in 1890. As a market gardener, he cultivated land around Bayswater with tireless effort, feeding many families with his hands, and contributing meaningfully to the economic and social fabric of the region.
In 1931, Mr Hu courageously intervened in a violent street incident, protecting a white woman named Gladys Hume from her former partner's assault. At a time when racial prejudice was widespread, his brave actions stood out. A Chinese man standing up for justice and helping a stranger was rare and powerful. At the same time, newspapers hailed him as a "brave protector", a title that became a symbol of cross-cultural trust and solidarity.
By organising these cultural outings, CWCC plays an essential role in bringing people together. On one hand, they breathe life into the stories of migrant pioneers, helping both seniors and new migrants connect more deeply with Australian history and the values of resilience and contribution. On the other hand, these events encourage community conversations, allowing history to become a vibrant thread that links everyone together.
Mr Hu's journey is filled with migration, perseverance, and generosity, resonating deeply within our community. One participant shared, "Listening to his story brought back memories of my journey as a migrant. Though our experiences differ, his courage and strength still inspire us today." Another senior added, "It makes me feel proud. Stories like his remind us that we have deep roots here in Australia."
