In July, the Willetton Community Hub of Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC) has been buzzing with joy, thanks to Evergreen College's new dance class. A professional dance instructor conducts a one-hour dance class every Tuesday and Friday morning, during which seniors gracefully stretch their bodies to soft music, exercising while learning new skills and experiencing the beauty of dance.
The seniors at the Willetton Community Hub are not just participants in the dance class; they are its biggest fans. Their enthusiasm is palpable, some even suggesting, "Why are there only two weekly classes? Can we have dance classes every day?" This level of excitement is a testament to the meticulous teaching and fun exercises provided by the instructors, making the dance class a highlight of their week.
The Tuesday dance class is led by CWCC volunteer Ms. Yan. With decades of professional experience, Ms Yan choreographed dance compositions and ran her dance classes in Perth. Formerly an oncologist and a long-time fitness enthusiast, she deeply understands seniors' health needs and exercise habits. She carefully designs the dance moves, schedules the class progression, and selects suitable music, ensuring that the dance class effectively exercises the body while allowing seniors to enjoy the fun of physical activity in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere.
Mr. Mai, a dedicated student of the CWCC dance class, often struggles with raising his hands due to rheumatism. However, Ms. Yan's gentle and progressive teaching method, tailored to each senior's physical condition, has amazed him. "I never thought I could dance!"
Ms. Yan believes dancing is an effective exercise and physical activity. Thus, she maintains strict standards for the movements. Meticulously explains the details of each move, including the parts of the body involved and the correct way to apply force. She also demonstrates both correct and incorrect movements to emphasise proper technique. Mr. Yi, another senior, said, "I feel that my muscle control has improved, and I've regained a sense of control over my body."
Additionally, Ms. Yan teaches exercises that can be done at home, ensuring that seniors continue to benefit from regular physical activity even when not at the CWCC community hub. Ms Eng expressed her gratitude, saying she always wanted to exercise but needed more professional guidance to ensure her movements were correct and effective. Fortunately, CWCC's volunteer instructors provide expert advice.
Seeing the seniors at CWCC enjoy dancing and staying active brings great comfort to Ms. Yan. She shared, "As a dancer, having a generous heart and a soft spirit allows one to appreciate and express beauty. Volunteering at CWCC makes me incredibly happy."
