Navigating the complexities of aged care can be challenging, especially for immigrant families unfamiliar with Australia's system. However, there is support available. Nursing homes have become an important option for many seniors in their later years, but accessing these services can sometimes be challenging. To address this, Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC) hosted a bilingual seminar at the Hillview Multicultural Community Centre, featuring speakers from the Department of Services and multicultural service officers. The seminar offered practical insights into finding, applying for, and settling into a nursing home, providing reassurance to immigrant families.
The speakers kicked off the event by providing a comprehensive overview of Australia's aged care system. Seniors can choose between home care services, which promote independent living, or nursing home care, where support for daily living, medical needs, emotional well-being, and social activities is provided by dedicated facilities. CWCC supports both options, allowing seniors to select the care that suits their needs.
For those opting for nursing home care, the process begins with a government assessment to determine care requirements and eligibility. Following the assessment, applicants receive detailed information on available nursing homes. The speakers advised seniors and their families to thoroughly research and visit potential nursing homes, carefully considering factors like location, care services, facility quality, and staff expertise to ensure a perfect fit.
Cost was a major concern for attendees, and the speakers clarified that nursing home fees are generally covered by a mix of government subsidies and personal contributions. They encouraged seniors and their families to explore available government support to help with financial planning and budgeting. Before moving in, applicants must complete a waiting period, receive a service offer, review contract details, and sign agreements.
In line with CWCC's commitment to person-centred care, the speakers highlighted that a good nursing home will offer personalised care plans tailored to each senior's health needs and preferences. This ensures they receive comprehensive and compassionate care, making them feel valued and respected. This seminar provided seniors with the essential knowledge and tools to make confident, informed decisions about their future care.
