This September, Ms. Choo Siew Ying, a senior client of Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC), celebrated her 104th birthday. At her birthday banquet, four generations of her family gathered, enjoying a heartwarming reunion. Her granddaughter, Geraldine, who is Ms. Choo’s primary carer, shared the secrets to her grandmother’s longevity and highlighted the indispensable role CWCC has played in her journey.
Born in 1920, Ms. Choo moved from Malaysia to Australia over 40 years ago. She is now a great-grandmother to three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. As the "superstar" of CWCC’s Willetton Community Hub, Ms. Choo sets a positive example of aging with grace. Despite her advanced age, she remains engaged in various activities at the community centre, especially enjoying her favourite pastime—playing mahjong.
Over two years ago, Ms. Choo suffered a stroke that left her hospitalised for over a month. Reflecting on her time spent in the hospital, the language barriers, cultural differences, and unfamiliar surroundings was a challenge for Ms Choo. This reinforced her family’s decision to care for her at home, rather than moving her into a nursing home.
Geraldine attributes Ms Choo’s long life to her positive outlook and the love of her family. The personalised services provided by CWCC have made her home care possible and are of great assistance. Currently, Ms. Choo receives personal care services from CWCC six days a week and regularly participates in social activities at the CWCC community centre.
Beyond practical assistance, Ms Choo’s family greatly appreciates the encouragement and emotional support provided by the CWCC staff. Geraldine mentioned that although her grandmother has limited mobility, the support workers from CWCC always encourage her to stay active. Even when Ms. Choo moves slowly or needs a walking aid, CWCC’s staff are always by her side, helping her maintain a positive mindset and physical function.
From the positive experiences with the CWCC’s services, Ms. Choo’s daughter, Valerie, has also decided to become a CWCC client. Now in her eighties, Valerie is utilising CWCC’s services for domestic assistance, meal preparation, and social support to maintain her independent lifestyle. Additionally, as Ms. Choo’s primary caregiver, Geraldine has received help through CWCC’s Carer Gateway program, including respite care and support workshops. This has allowed her to take breaks from the pressures of long-term caregiving and rebalance her life.
CWCC’s comprehensive care has enhanced the quality of life for three generations, enabling the entire family to move forward. Geraldine is thankful that with the love, care and support around Ms Choo, she is contented and ageing gracefully. This is also CWCC’s vision for all elders—to help them maintain autonomy and dignity, enjoy thoughtful care, and experience the satisfaction of life as centenarians.
