How can kitchen scraps be turned into valuable resources? What is the easiest way to raise earthworms and produce organic fertiliser? In collaboration with the City of Bayswater, Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC) recently hosted two engaging gardening workshops at Morley Evergreen College, offering seniors an opportunity to explore the wonders of sustainable gardening.

Gardening is not only a cherished part of the Australian lifestyle but also a meaningful way for seniors to connect with nature, enjoy outdoor activities, and develop an awareness of sustainable living. With this in mind, CWCC carefully designed these workshops to equip participants with practical gardening skills under expert guidance. At the same time, Morley Evergreen College serves as an ideal space for seniors to discover new hobbies, expand their social circles, and share experiences with like-minded friends in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.

The first workshop on February 17 featured guest speaker Yann Toussaint, who offered hands-on guidance on worm farming for organic fertiliser production and demonstrated lemongrass propagation. Seniors engaged in discussions to learn about maintaining moisture and temperature levels, as well as feeding methods. The session concluded with a lucky draw, where five participants won complete worm farming kits to apply their new knowledge.

On March 10, the second workshop covered composting techniques to reduce kitchen and garden waste and seed preservation methods for fruits and vegetables. Yann Toussaint explained the essentials of composting, including balancing green (nitrogen-rich) and brown (carbon-rich) materials, maintaining moisture, and ensuring aeration. Composting reduces waste and produces nutrient-rich fertiliser for home gardens.

Yann Toussaint is an expert in environmental anthropology and history who focuses on community gardening, sustainability, and cultural integration. His teaching combines theory with practical activities, helping seniors learn essential gardening skills and adopt sustainable practices.

The gardening workshops provided participants with education and a fresh perspective on life. Working with soil and plants fostered a deep sense of fulfilment and appreciation for the connection between people and nature. CWCC believes aging should be about continuous discovery. Morley Evergreen College embodies this by offering a space for seniors to experiment, learn, and expand their horizons.

Join us every Monday at 11:30 AM at Morley Evergreen College (6A Blades Close) and embark on your own new experience!
