For many new migrants in Perth, one of the first challenges is figuring out how to get around. In a new city, learning bus routes, train connections, navigation apps, and ticket machines can be overwhelming. These everyday tasks can limit a person’s mobility, confidence, and ability to connect with others.
To address these challenges, Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC) Evergreen College started the Building Digital Skills Program. In April, the focus was on “Exploring Perth Public Transport.” This program helps people from diverse backgrounds take their first steps toward navigating the city independently.

In the first week, the program focused on digital tools for travel. CWCC volunteers guided participants step by step in planning trips around Perth using digital resources. They learned how to use online maps, check real-time bus arrivals with the Transperth App, and understand the SmartRider payment system.
In the second week, participants left the classroom for real-world experience. With help from Transperth staff and live Chinese interpretation, they explored Perth’s public transport by bus, train, and ferry. They practised using ticket machines, learned how to find Transperth staff and security, and what to do if they got lost or needed help.

Many participants said that when they first arrived, language barriers and unfamiliar places made them rely on family or others to get around. Some even avoided travelling alone. After finishing the program, one participant said, “This was my first time taking a bus since arriving in Perth, and I actually did it.” Another shared that the transport system now feels much clearer, saying, “it feels like my world has opened up, and I’m no longer limited to just the area around my home.”
This shift from relying on others to becoming independent demonstrates the program's real value.

After last year’s positive feedback, CWCC Evergreen College has expanded and improved the Building Digital Skills Program. Now, digital learning is closely linked with real-life situations. The program is offered at both the Willetton and Bayswater Community Hubs to support people in different areas.
Looking ahead, CWCC will continue creating programs that build digital skills, support community inclusion, and offer practical support. These efforts aim to help new migrants and people from diverse backgrounds live more independent, connected, and confident lives in Perth.
