The community is getting more aware of the roles and needs of carers. Recently a group of seniors in our community hubs thought earnestly about the questions asked by Ken from Chung Wah Community Care (Chung Wah CC) Carer Gateway Team.
"Are you a caregiver? Or are you being taken care of?"
"If you are a care recipient, who takes care of you? Is your caregiver tired? Do they need any assistance?"
"If you're caring for someone, who do you take care of? Do you need any help? Do you have any carers around you? Do they need help too?"
Many seniors nodded and discussed among themselves.
Last week, the Carer Gateway Team of Chung Wah CC held presentations on the Carer Gateway Program at the Balcatta and Willetton Community Hubs. Ken highlighted a vital message in the presentations: "Carers need care too!" The Carer Gateway Program can provide free and practical supports.
Many people do not realise that they are actually caregivers. If you're caring for family members or friends living with disability, medical conditions, mental illness or who are frail due to age, without any financial compensations, you are a caregiver. Carer Gateway is a free Australian-wide government initiative to provide carers with emotional, social and other practical supports. Chung Wah CC is a partner organisation of Carer Gateway that provides assessment services for non-English speaking carers and helps them obtain relevant information and support from Carer Gateway.
