Old familiar tunes fill the community hubs of Chung Wah Community Care (Chung Wah CC) one after another. At our regular Evergreen College singing class, the seniors indulged in the songs that were part of their era. These golden classics have been with the seniors since childhood, growing up and memorable experiences, and are deeply engraved in their minds.
Music brings seniors many health benefits. From a medical point of view, music can have a therapeutic effect like medicines. Music therapy is becoming increasingly common as a clinical treatment method nowadays. The frequency of musical sound waves can stimulate physiological reactions. Harmonic resonance enriches human tissue cells, directly affecting brain waves, heart rate and breathing rhythm.
When sound waves are transmitted to the brain and spread to all parts of the body, it can regulate the person's mood, help eliminate tension, anxiety, depression and fear, and improve the person's resilience. This is the principle of music therapy.
For the seniors, whether they enjoy listening to music or singing, both can contribute to their physical and mental wellbeing.
1. Music stimulates the brain, activates cells, and enhances memory and concentration.
2. When seniors sing, the brain releases dopamine, a chemical that can make them feel good and help people bond with each other.
3. Singing boosts the level of immunoglobulin in the body and enhances the immune function of the human body.
One of the objectives of the singing class at Chung Wah CC is to support seniors' physical and mental wellbeing (wellness) and recovery ability (reablement). In addition, by participating in choral singing, seniors can communicate with each other and improve their social skills (connectedness).
Chung Wah has been servicing the WA community since 1909, dedicated to improving the quality of life of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
