Far from their homeland, the Mid-Autumn Festival carries a deep meaning for the senior Asian community in Perth, intensifying their longing for family and the familiar embrace of home. Yet, despite the distance and nostalgia, their warm enthusiasm for the holiday is a true testament to the enduring spirit of togetherness. In the last two weeks, Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC) has been a beacon of connection, hosting joyous Mid-Autumn celebrations at their Balcatta and Willetton Community Hubs, giving seniors a special place to gather and relish the comforting spirit of reunion.
In a touching gesture, Deputy Consul General Wang Fengzhong from the Chinese Consulate in Perth joined the celebrations, sharing heartfelt greetings with the seniors. "Dear seniors," he began, "on behalf of the Chinese Consulate in Perth, I wish you all good health and a joyous Mid-Autumn Festival." His warm words resonated with the seniors, reminding them that while the festival brings them memories of their homeland, their motherland also holds them close in thought. He also applauded CWCC for its unwavering dedication to the care of Chinese seniors, recognising the organisation's outstanding contribution to multicultural harmony in Australia.
Joining the festivities were other key figures from the community, including CWCC CEO Theresa Kwok, Chung Wah Association President Dr. Chen Ting, Senior Vice President Yuan Haobo, CWCC Chairwoman Esther Zheng, Financial Manager Wu Lizheng, and Board Member Gao Yaoquan. Together, they mingled with the seniors and volunteers, capturing the day's most heartwarming moments with photos and shared smiles.
The success of these vibrant celebrations was made possible by the tireless efforts of volunteers, whose performances filled the air with joy and culture. The festivities opened at the Balcatta Community Hub with an awe-inspiring Tai Chi demonstration. The seniors watched in admiration as each move flowed with grace and strength, earning rounds of applause. Next, the Qingyaxuan Dance Troupe enchanted everyone with their elegant performance, bringing to life the beauty and harmony of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Meanwhile, at the Willetton Community Hub, students from the Wenxin Dance Class charmed the audience with their captivating display of traditional Chinese dance. The soothing melodies of CWCC's instrumental performance lingered in the hearts of the seniors, creating a serene and reflective atmosphere.
The seniors had a great time playing games and enjoying the community atmosphere at the Mid-Autumn Festival celebration. They left with prizes and smiles, feeling the warmth of celebrating together.
No matter how far from home they may be, the spirit of the festival and the love of community remind these seniors that the warmth of family is never truly out of reach. CWCC hopes that through these celebrations, every senior feels the embrace of the community, the joy of companionship, and the light of the moon shining in their hearts, easing their homesick longing.
