Every carer has a story, and this week, Australia turns the spotlight on these unsung heroes.
From 15th to 21st October, National Carers Week 2023 is observed. This initiative is led by Carer Australia and is funded by the Australian Government's Department of Social Services in collaboration with the National Carer Network. National Carers Week aims to elevate awareness across the Australian public regarding the diversity of carers and their indispensable role. This year's theme for Carers Week is "Millions of Reasons to Care."
There are 2.65 million Australians who care for their loved ones daily. These carers come from various cultures, ages, backgrounds, and responsibilities. They balance care demands with their personal work, study, and physical and mental well-being. In support of National Carers Week, Chung Wah Community Care (Chung Wah CC) hosts tea gatherings at the Balcatta and Willetton Community Hubs, providing an opportunity to unite and celebrate with the carers.
It's common for individuals to overlook that they might indeed be carers. Suppose you offer unpaid support to family or friends who have disabilities, illnesses, mental health challenges, or are simply ageing. In that case, you fall within the definition of a carer. It's vital to understand caring for others can be demanding, and carers need support too. Chung Wah CC collaborates with the Carer Gateway programme and is partnered with Carers WA. We facilitate assessment services for carers from non-English backgrounds, guiding them to pertinent information and support via Carer Gateway. Carer Gateway, an Australian government initiative, extends emotional, social, and tangible support to carers.
