Every May, National Volunteer Week illuminates the incredible contributions of those who selflessly dedicate their time to support others behind the scenes. This year, Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC) commemorated the occasion with a series of activities honouring its volunteers and nurturing a stronger culture of appreciation and mutual support within the community.
At the Balcatta Community Hub, the usual morning news session was filled with joy as CWCC staff officially announced the beginning of "Volunteer Appreciation Week". It introduced each volunteer present, acknowledging their time and dedication to nurturing the community.
Volunteers stood side by side with seniors, smiling in group photos that captured the spirit of the occasion. One volunteer shared, “Here, we’re not just service providers; we're embraced as family.” That sense of belonging is precisely what CWCC strives to cultivate.
Meanwhile, at the Willetton Community Hub, volunteers took a moment in the spotlight as they were invited on stage to uplifting applause from our seniors. Many attendees had also written personalised thank-you cards with heartfelt words that deeply touched their recipients. These gestures not only helped volunteers feel valued but also allowed seniors to experience the joy and empowerment that come from giving back to others.
One particularly moving moment came when a senior publicly thanked volunteer Tony. Her husband, who lives with dementia, has been receiving care for some time, and Tony’s patience and compassion have made a lasting impact. “Over the years, Tony has truly cared for our family with sincerity,” she said. Her words offered a powerful, personal reflection of CWCC’s people-centred service philosophy.
Gratitude and recognition are the fuel that keeps volunteers going. To celebrate their contributions, CWCC also organised an autumn outing to Raeburn Orchards. Amid golden trees and the sweet scent of ripening persimmons, volunteers picked fruit and shared stories of their service. The laughter echoing through the orchard was a testament to the joyful connections being made. Afterwards, volunteers praised the thoughtful planning, delicious lunch, and the chance to form new friendships with fellow team members.
CWCC’s approach to volunteerism has always centred on mutual growth. In March, CWCC was invited to take part in the Fremantle Positive Ageing & Volunteering Expo, where it joined other organisations and government representatives in exploring how older adults can transition from being care recipients to active contributors. At CWCC, we believe that volunteering is ageless—everyone has the power to become a light for others.
