The Open Day at The Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC) Balcatta Community Hub was a multicultural celebration. The CEO of CWCC, Mrs Theresa Kwok, delightedly shared how she was swept up in a dance by an enthusiastic senior, unveiling previously hidden talents among the attendees.
This event successfully united new friends from Southeast Asia with old friends from Latin America, exemplifying the rich cultural amalgamation within Australia while highlighting the vibrant spirit of CWCC’s elderly community. The Filipino Australian Club of Perth (FACPI) was instrumental in bringing together dozens of community members for the occasion, with many seniors rearranging their schedules to show their support for CWCC’s initiatives.
Mr. Rod Alido, the leader of FACPI, commended CWCC’s outstanding service and commitment to multicultural integration. He was particularly impressed by the enthusiasm and vitality of the seniors present. The atmosphere was electrified by Juan from Colombia with his vigorous Latin American drumming, followed by Mariya from the Philippines, who led the seniors in the traditional Salakot dance. Adorned with broad-brimmed traditional hats and wearing vibrant, elaborate attire, the seniors showcased the unique artistic heritage of the Philippines. The Salakot dance was beautifully accompanied by Latin percussion, synchronizing every movement with rhythmic beats.
In a truly harmonious moment, seniors from diverse linguistic backgrounds came together, united by the universal appeal of music and dance. CWCC’s elderly, regardless of age, continue to showcase their charm and enthusiasm, actively exploring and engaging in their passions, which adds colour and vibrancy to their later years.
The open day, held on April 29th, featured a series of enthralling performances, culminating in the dramatic Spanish bullfight dance and the traditional Filipino dance, The Rigodon. Ms. Stoffell, a Filipino senior representative, was amazed by the dynamic environment of the hub. Contrary to her expectations of what senior activity centers might offer, she found CWCC’s community hub bursting with life and energy. This positive and active approach to senior living provides inspiration and sets a commendable example for other cultural communities.
