Imagine sharing laughter over dim sum while your small act changes a neighbor's day. Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC) celebrated International Volunteer Day with its annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on 29 November. Nearly 60 volunteers from the Balcatta and Willetton Community Hubs came together to enjoy dim sum and stir-fry in a cozy Cantonese restaurant. The room was filled with applause, singing, and laughter, reflecting the close bonds among the volunteers.
CWCC Senior Manager Lingkun began the event by warmly thanking everyone on behalf of CWCC. He spoke about how the organisation has grown over the past year, reaching more places and connecting with new communities. He highlighted the importance of volunteers to this work. “Every volunteer adds a human touch to our services — you are the heart of the community.”

Volunteer Coordinator Ivy also thanked the volunteers for their dedication over the year. “A caring community is not built on resources, but on the generosity of people like you,” she said. She pointed out that the volunteer team is made up of people from many different backgrounds, but they all share a willingness to give to others.
Next, CWCC Senior Manager Nunu led a practical training session for the volunteers. She covered important topics like safety, communication, and ways to connect with the community. “Being a volunteer is also a way to keep learning and growing,” she told everyone. Many volunteers said afterwards that the session was very helpful.

Each CWCC volunteer has a unique story. At the Willetton Community Hub, Shirley and her husband Tony have been a dependable team for years, helping with many activities no matter the weather. This year, they represented CWCC at the City of Melville’s annual volunteer recognition evening, showing the steady commitment that comes with long-term service.
Another inspiring story is about Mr Qiang, a retired chef from Vietnam who now volunteers at the Balcatta Community Hub. After a hand injury forced him to leave his restaurant job, he still wanted to cook. “I can no longer keep up with the pace of a commercial kitchen, but I can still cook for the community,” he shared.

Since joining CWCC, he has helped prepare meals for the community and taught other volunteers how to control the flame and season food properly. He always cooks with care and passion.
CWCC welcomes more community members to join the volunteer team. You do not need special skills or lots of free time. If you are willing to help, you are already an important part of our community. Volunteer roles at CWCC include event support, elder support groups, kitchen help, language companionship, cultural activities, and IT assistance. There is something for everyone, no matter your age or background.
