In a self-interested setting, success often revolves around personal achievements and interests. However, in a collective and family environment, success is usually intertwined with the betterment of the greater good.
The story of Mrs. Tran, our consumer of Chung Wah Community Care (Chung Wah CC), exemplifies this view. Born into a large farming family in Vietnam, Mrs. Tran was the youngest of ten children. Under traditional beliefs, girls received limited education. After the second grade, she dropped out of school to help her family with farming. Not receiving an education was a lifelong regret for Mrs. Tran. In 1963, she married a fisherman and had seven children. Life was incredibly challenging during the 20-year Vietnam War (1955-1975). Still, she and her husband resiliently provided educational opportunities for their children, ensuring their healthy and happy upbringing. In the 1980s, amid the wave of refugees, Mrs Tran braved the raging seas, risking her life for her children's future. Fortunately, in 1981, her family relocated to Australia. Facing challenges due to language, culture, and lack of work experience, they eventually overcame these barriers with the help of the Vietnamese community, stabilising their life.
Mrs. Tran considers her greatest achievement to be raising her children to be successful contributors to society. In Australia, they have various accomplishments and contribute to the community. Her grandchildren have become professionals, contributing even more to society. She is immensely proud of them. Mrs Tran successfully applied for government-funded aged care services and chose Chung Wah CC. She participates in activities at the Balcatta Community Hub every week, especially enjoying the morning exercises. Her circle of friends has expanded, enriching her life. Over 80 years old, Mrs Tran has faced many hardships in life, but at Chung Wah CC, she is enjoying her golden years.
