As spring approaches, Chung Wah Community Care's (CWCC) Evergreen College celebrated a remarkable end to its quarter. This week, Evergreen College held its quarterly graduation ceremony, where students and volunteer teachers gathered with a sense of accomplishment, marking yet another milestone in their golden era.
The seniors were filled with so much joy as they put on the black "graduation caps" they had crafted with their teachers, and proudly accepted their certificates of completion. Amidst the applause and cheers, the students delightedly tossed their caps into the air, momentarily reliving the pure happiness of their school days.
Margret, an English teacher, focuses on teaching seniors practical language skills to help them learn essential vocabulary and comprehend the world better. She believes that learning a language can provide seniors from immigrant backgrounds with a stronger sense of security and a boost in confidence. Seniors at CWCC's community hubs can also join fun exercise classes at Evergreen College, like Tai Chi and dance, to keep both their bodies and minds active.
Evergreen College offers skill-building courses like cooking, storytelling, and handicraft workshops to support lifelong learning. These activities engage memory and cognitive functions and provide traditional cultural experiences. Additionally, the college organises entertainment activities such as singing, dancing, and board games to strengthen the sense of community among seniors.
To extend its reach to more community members, CWCC has launched the "Home Evergreen College" and "Community Evergreen College" initiatives. Home Evergreen College brings the experience of the community hubs into seniors' homes through online exercise videos and digital resources, ensuring they remain active even at home. Meanwhile, Community Evergreen College expands services beyond CWCC, offering lectures and outings that encourage broader social interaction.
Whether through classes, activities, or community services, Evergreen College is dedicated to helping seniors live independently, regain and maintain mobility, and rebuild community connections. As a unique feature of CWCC, Evergreen College continues to innovate and expand its services, offering a diverse range of activities that fully support the physical and mental well-being of seniors and community members alike.
