In late August, just as the prolonged winter seemed to subside and the cold, rainy days made way for clear blue skies, the plum blossoms around the Chung Wah Community Care (Chung Wah CC) Balcatta Community Hub remained in full splendour. "A few plum branches bloom alone against the chill." Even in the biting cold, when all other flowers have withered, the plum blossoms stand tall and proud.
During their noon break, seniors at the Community Hub, taking a moment of leisure, gathered to admire the blossoming plums. The plum blossoms are indeed varied and elegant; from afar, they appear like a fan adorned with red, while up close, they resemble delicate pink butterflies resting on the branches. With every breeze, the aroma of the blossoms fills the air. Breathing in deeply, the seniors felt rejuvenated. It was as if they'd entered a personal fairy tale, leaving all troubles behind.
The red plum tree at the Balcatta Community Hub was planted 13 years ago. In 2010, the centenary of the Chung Wah Association was celebrated. Enthusiastic supporters initiated a tree-planting scheme around the car park. "A decade for a tree, a century for a person." The hundred-year legacy of the Chung Wah Association and the over-decade-old red plum tree beautifully complement each other.
Plum blossoms symbolise resilience and bravery. They are a testament to human perseverance, blooming in the harshest winters and representing the indomitable spirit often celebrated in ancient Chinese poetry.
"Plum blossoms, in rivalry with the snow, refuse to yield, leaving poets grappling for words."
"In the south, plum blossoms bloom several times, yet far away, signs of age are already evident."
Inspired, the seniors penned: "In the southern city lanes, spring returns; only plum blossoms are seen, no humans in sight." This sentiment perhaps echoes their gratitude and fond remembrance of the benevolent tree planters. Taking photos beside the plum tree, the seniors eagerly anticipate the forthcoming spring, adding a dash of joy to their lives. Yet, as the day ends, they depart with a sense of longing.
